The shift in role play saw a day of fun learning and bonding laughter. The Fathers’ Day Event was organised for the Camp One participants at Enchanting Elves, Chennai. Hobby camps for children in the city have become no less than a fad, where parents send their children more for their time off than the actual skills they are proposed to acquire out of one. In such times, something different is always welcome. Enchanting Elves- The children’s activity and resource centre conducted a pottery workshop for children on Saturday, April 4 at Kilpauk. The event saw participation from numerous kids of various age groups. The first part of the workshop involved a pot design on paper, where children were given sheets of paper to draw the kind of pot they would like to make, complete with the colours. The next step was Sketch Your Story where inspired by the tale of the thirsty crow the children were asked to draw an animal of their choice next to the picture of the pot. The third round in the workshop was where the children actually hit the wheel. Vishwanathan, MFA, a ceramist who served at The Valley in Bangalore and DakshinChitra and Kalakshetra, Chennai, assisted each of the children in spinning their creation on the motorised potter’s wheel. The pots were left to dry and every kid in the vicinity was elated at having tried something different and created something that they could only draw on a piece of paper all this while. It was a Saturday morning well-spent.

Kids Pottery Workshop
Wheel (Motorised) Pottery workshop at Enchanting Elves, The Childrens’ Activity and Resource Centre, Kilpauk.
Pot Designs on Paper
The children beautifully designed and coloured their pots on paper first.
My Pitcher and a thirsty Lion!
This was followed by a ’sketch your story’ session. Inspired by the tale of The Thirsty Crow, the children sketched and coloured their favourite (thirsty) animal or bird along with their pot sketch.
Wheel Pottery
This was followed by hours of wheel pottery. Each child had his turn to spin his clay creation on a motorised wheel.
Different pots, pitchers, vase, lamps, bowls with lids were created by the children under the guidance and assistance of Mr. Vishwanathan, our potter. He explained the nuances of pottery, the techniques and demonstarted to the children while they worked on the wheel. A Saturday morning delightfully spent; a promise well kept.
