Fathers Day Out!

Fathers' Day Out!

The Fathers’ Day Event at Enchanting Elves saw dads (and moms) battle it out with crayons and hip hop moves to the instructions of their little ones. The shift in role play saw a day of fun learning and bonding laughter. The Fathers’ Day Event was organised for the Camp One participants at Enchanting Elves, Chennai. The fathers’ took a day off from work to spend a day with their kids at our activity centre in Kilpauk. Kudos to our sportive super heroes. To see them in action; view the fathers’ day album.

It’s a tough call for  parents to choose the right summer camp for their kids; with a zillion summer camps in Chennai, its definitely a heady decision to make. How do you identify a summer camp that best suits your child? Here’s a start… a check-list to select a summer camp.  Do add your inputs …

1. Ask questions; ask your child what he really wants to do. If the child is not too sure; map his abilities and interests to the activities the camp offers.

2. Choose a camp that is ideally nearby (driving your kids across the town is tough on the kids during the summer)

3. Look around the camp venue; all camps allow you to do that. Its a privilege you must avail.

4. Meet the resource team at the camp.

5. Do they have a doctor on call?

6. Always give instructions to the camp of your child’s food allergy and prescribed medicines.

7. A child psychologist to monitor the child’s behaviors would be a plus.

8. Splash pool is a great way to beat the heat; but check the hygiene factors. Cross infection is high and a sick child is a spoiler.

9. How many kids are enrolled in each class? An average to 10 to 15 per activity is ideal for a resource person and her helper to monitor.

10. Does the camp offer full day and half day option? Working parents prefer a full day activity camo than a creche these days.

Keeping the children from higher classes in mind, who have to be empowered in handling their exams and life well, a tailor made course called Wizards of Speech has been put together. The core areas of speech (reading and conversation skills), writing (handwriting and coherency) and body language are dealt with here. Children here are taught to comprehend various terminologies and use them in proper sentences. Their mind is nourished with the drive and verve to excel not only in their upcoming examinations but also in life. Life skills training form a major part of these sessions.

Drama is another platform where children and youth can throw caution to the winds and just be themselves. Drama helps them expand their lexis and expressions and gives them the much required poise to face a crowd. Adolescents require activities that pique their learning interests and yet do not come across as a childish activity.

While Drama is for the older children, Sing – a – long is for those in the age group of 3 and 6.This helps children emote and express themselves better, and with more confidence.

Formed on the basic principles of ABL is Interactive Storytelling, which uses various techniques such as Flash cards, puppets, charts etc., as a catalyst, to help children develop their vocabulary and body language. In the traditional form of storytelling one would see the storyteller address the children and the kids only listen. However, while this has its merits, the children are unable to build their vocabulary as fast as they can or wish to, because of the lack of activities which can keep them interested or facilitate their conversation skills. In Interactive Storytelling, the storyteller helps the children involve themselves more and speak more, whereby they enjoy themselves immensely while learning.

Enchanting Elves, Chennai focuses solely on building the vocabulary and self confidence of children with fun filled and intelligent activities. All the sessions are framed on the lines of ABL – Activity Based Learning. Any form of learning where only one of the senses work, cannot really be construed as learning per se, is their mantra.

The quest for an interesting class that appeals to parents and kids alike is a distant dream and a never ending one. Children today are far more demanding, intelligent and adventurous. They are exposed to myriad concepts that we parents were not and consequently, keeping them riveted in class is easier said than done. When one understands what it is that truly captivates the child’s heart and interests, it is really very simple and very basic. All that the child really wishes to ask of his or her parents are ‘Can you teach me something that helps me evolve as a person and more importantly, can you do the same in an interactive and enjoyable method?’ Somehow, in this mechanical world we forget to put the interests of the child ahead of ours and eventually, the classes the child goes to are those which are aligned to suit our needs and free time.

Parents, on the other hand, appreciate and welcome any creative class, that frees them of the trouble of dragging their children to a boring session. More importantly, it is necessary that they invest their hard earned money in quality time for children. Each child is special and parents are frustrated with the lack of originality in classes which are run nowadays as a mass school. Having said all this, the advent of a novel and alluring concept of classes in Chennai, that caters to the needs of parents and kids must be explored.
